A few years ago, sailor, master boatbuilder, and designer Clark Mills
was casting about for a new concept in a shoal-draft daysailer that would
rig and sail easily, quickly and comfortably. The new design would also
need to gracefully accommodate family and friends with plenty of space for
their gear and stores. Clark’s concept focused on “a new breed of catboat”
The result of Clark’s effort is the Sun Cat … an easily driven and
roomy daysailer and overnighter. The Sun Cat’s shoal draft can gunkhole
along coasts and in harbors not accessible to more burdensome yachts. It
is conveniently trailered and beached. Best of all, the Sun Cat sails really
well. It is also very stable and moves easily into a choppy sea.
The Sun Cat’s heritage is the famous Cape Cod Cat used in the early
1900s to work the clam and scallop beds in the rough waters of Vineyard
and Nantucket Sound. These boats carried huge loads in all kinds of
weather and sea conditions. They became known for their stability, amazing speed, and ability to sail into a steep chop. These qualities prompted
Clark Mills to put his concept of the Sun Cat on paper and commit it to
modern fiberglass construction.
The Sun Cat was an immediate success, and Com-Pac Yachts builds
today’s version with its typical outstanding quality materials and construction. Sailors who appreciate timeless design will enjoy endless hours of
peaceful cruising and exhilarating performance in the Sun Cat. Low maintenance and design simplicity will ensure the Sun Cat’s continued high value.
THE SUN CAT INTERIOR
The Sun Cat’s interior is bright and airy with ample 3’6” sitting headroom for large adults. With a forward lift hatch, main slide hatch and two
opening ports, ventilation and light flood the cabin. Another round fixed
port faces forward.
Two large settee storage bins can accommodate most everything
you’ll want to take along for the weekend, and there’s space for galley
equipment and stores. Space for a porta potty has also been designed.
Teak trim on the exterior and ash interior trim give the Sun Cat the
look and feel of the finest marine tradition. Quality upholstery promises
comfort as well as good looks.
THE MASTENDR™ QUICK RIG SAILING SYSTEM
The Mastendr Rig add an exclusive dimension of convenience to trailer
sailing. Your mast is up and ready to go seconds. Stand the mast, insert the
safely pin, attach the headstay and lock the shroud lever. That’s all there is
